Guard Alaska Bear Spray For Camping, Because Bear Attacks Are Not Cool

smores

Bear spray and camping go together like smores and campfires. One just doesn’t belong without the other and one of the major reasons for that is because being mauled by a quarter ton grizzly is not at all cool. Seriously, I enjoy camping and I’ve seen bears and one thing I know for sure is that it would be most unenjoyable if any of these bears I’ve had the pleasure of viewing in the wild were to bite me in the neck region. I’m fairly certain that would damper an otherwise wonderful weekend. I know what you’re thinking, “but what if the bear just clamped his ultra-powerful jaws of razor sharp teeth onto your torso or leg perhaps?”. The answer is still no. It’s not so much I’m worried about my neck exclusively, I’m just not that hip on putting any part of my body in the mouth of a Northern Wisconsin Black bear.

I’ve discussed this topic with friends and I have yet to find any that disagree with me about the whole bear mauling thing. We are all pretty much in agreement that having humongous razor sharp claws rip through our faces, exposing the skull underneath would be the polar opposite of a “good time”. That is why we all agree and adhere to 1 basic rule while camping and I’m going to capitalize this so it will hopefully sink in…

IF YOU ARE CAMPING ANYWHERE WHERE THERE MAY BE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF A BEAR BEING PRESENT YOU SHOULD HAVE GUARD ALASKA BEAR SPRAY ON YOU AT ALL TIMES.

This is an extremely simple rule to follow and one that could very realistically save your life one day. It just doesn’t make sense not to bring along protection from a creature that you have almost no chance at all of fending off with your bare hands. Also keep in mind that bears won’t follow basic rules of fighting etiquette. Before engaging in hand-to0hand combat with a bear you could certainly tell it “hey bear, let’s do this thing but no eye gouging, okay?” , but I doubt very seriously that it will listen. It’s pretty much just going to go for the throat.

As always I kid and say ridiculous things with the hope that you remember these bits of advice that I give you. Please do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and remember to carry bear spray if you are going to go camping in an area that could find you face-to-face with a bear.

Stay Safe,

Sutton’s Bay, Michigan: A Wine Country Bed and Breakfast Inn That Rekindles Romance

By: C.J. Good
Posted: Mar 28, 2011

When the chaos and confusion of our busy lives begins to wreak havoc, it is a good idea to take a little break to slow down, take a breath, and appreciate the important things in life: family, friends and nature. Fortunately, bed and breakfast inns all over the country provide a small piece of paradise for you to enjoy. Nestled in peaceful valleys, on picturesque rivers or shorelines, in meandering countryside or historic towns, a bed and breakfast inn is the perfect place to renew, recharge and rejuvenate. Rest and recuperate with loved-ones in landscapes that are idyllic and serene, with views you will never forget. Listen to the flow of rushing waters, watch for raptors soaring overhead; gather flowers and berries with your family, sip a cool beverage while relaxing on a porch swing, read on a bench warmed by the sun, or make smores over a campfire. There are many ways to experience contentment at a B & B inn. You will feel the urge to capture the essence in writing, on guitar, or with paint and brush.

When life gets stressful or overwhelming, sometimes the best thing to do is to take a little time out. Visiting a bed and breakfast inn can often bring solace, and leads to a rejuvenated mind, body and spirit. Imagine stepping away from the hustle and bustle of daily living to relax in places that exude peace and quiet.

When you want to kick back and revitalize, there are lots of destinations to consider. At a beach locale, the sound of crashing waves, salty ocean breezes, and soft sand beneath your feet can cultivate feelings of contentment. The right destination usually provides beautiful scenery for contemplation and deep thought. If the beach is crowded, why not head there at sunrise, sunset, or in the evening to see the Milky Way?

Consider taking a trip to a place you’ve never explored before. Sutton’s Bay, Michigan and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania are two areas reputed to provide their visitors with plenty of space to be by themselves. Breathtaking rolling hills, pastures, horses set against white snow views, acres of woods, farms, orchards and vineyards are some of the things you might see. Many writers have been inspired by these surroundings and musicians have composed beautiful music. If these options seem a bit remote, don’t fret. Many activities are available in the area, including shopping, performing arts, galleries, hiking, mushroom hunting, wine-tasting, biking, tennis, golf and walking. Many properties tend to be near water, which makes activities available such as fishing, kayaking, swimming and water sports. Sightseeing, tours, spa treatments, restaurant reservations and activities can usually be booked and taken care of by the innkeeper.

If making a quick getaway by air is not in your budget, why not hit the road? Some of the best places for finding contentment can be within a few hours drive. There are many areas you can visit where the nature around you brings a sense of solitude and relief. Take a walk around the grounds and facilities of a B & B and just reflect. The home-style comfort, peaceful lighting, relaxing porches and attractive gardens will transform your mood. Just a few days in this environment begs for the reveries of quiet contemplation and connection with your inner self, which often leads to new levels of awareness and clarity.

When the trip is over, return to your daily life with renewed enthusiasm and inspiration; ready to take on challenges.

One of the things important to most B & B innkeepers is the opportunity is to be of service to the hearts, minds and souls of their guests. Their goal is to create an environment for people to come and find some peace. Operating a successful B & B involves more than being a business owner. Innkeepers provide an atmosphere that can reawaken a person, enabling them to find some semblance of themselves in a busy world. Most innkeepers live and work at the establishment. The lodgers who visit them are called to be a part of their lives. In many cases, innkeepers are gifted with someone else’s confidentiality. Innkeepers have learned some very good lessons from their guests: when they should talk, when they need to listen, and when to get out of the way.

Right after having had a turbulent argument, a rattled couple visited a B & B inn. They needed to be in a different environment and in so doing, were able to rediscover the person they fell in love with originally. They found their centers and their souls. At the end of their stay, the tension melted away and the couple enjoyed a sense of peace and serenity.

Some innkeepers are so sensitive, and compassionate, they are able to provide a setting for people to unburden themselves. Not only are these innkeepers empathetic, they love to talk to people, and have the sensitivity to engage people. Innkeepers understand how to reach a level of communication, which makes their lodgers feel comfortable. Without hovering or being intrusive, innkeepers possess the uncanny art of knowing how to ask open-ended questions.

Persons with incredible despondency can be transformed in a matter of days. For whatever they need – healing, growing or understanding, a charming bed and breakfast inn can be a place where people go to recuperate, restore, renew, and reconnect with their loved-ones. All it takes is a unique combination of gorgeous nature and an innkeeper’s sense of attention to well-being.

A young couple arrived at a B & B inn in a state of grief. The innkeeper made their room cozy and nice. There were flowers in the room. The lights were dimmed with soft, soothing music. Candles were twinkling; down pillows were fluffed; the fireplace was lit and bath salts were placed inside. A massage appointment was arranged, and a picnic was provided. At the end of their stay, the stricken couple felt peaceful, inside and out. The visit was enormously therapeutic.

FEATURED PROPERTY: Hands down a near perfect blend of warm service, sumptuous dining, breathtaking rolling hills, horses grazing in pastures, and home style charm, The Inn at Black Star Farms, Suttons Bay, Michigan is highly recommended.

ROOMS: Rooms are comfortable and spacious. Locally made Patricia’s chocolates are placed on the bed; made with the house specialty: eau de vie fruit brandy. Signature Aveda toiletries are included.

SERVICE: The level of service, from the check-in staff, to the wait staff, to the housekeeping crew and personnel in the tasting rooms and stables, is known to be impeccable. The staff is very polite and filled with genuine smiles. When breakfast is served, the owner commiserates with guests.

AMENITIES: There is a copper kinetic wind sculpture that greets guests by the fountain; it is the work of a local artisan. Arriving guests receive a bottle of house red wine. A plate of cookies awaits visitors in the common area. In the evening, the inn hosts a welcome hospitality hour in the Pegasus lounge featuring local wines and cheese made on the premises. Public balconies offer mesmerizing views of 160 acres of woods, orchards and vineyards. The back courtyard has comfortable lounge chairs for reading or relaxing. Gourmet picnics, prepared by the inn on request, can be enjoyed on a blanket in the courtyard, near the croquet lawn. WiFi is included in rooms and throughout the public spaces. A sauna and marble Jacuzzi tub, with double-headed Jacuzzi shower, is also available. 160 acres of groomed wooded trails are accessible for hiking. In winter, guests can cross country ski on the property. The inn also provides snowshoes. Boyne mountain ski resort is one hour away. The inn has a library with a variety of books and board games like Monopoly or skip-bo.

LOCATION: The location is in the heart of the Leelanau Peninsula wine trail, about 20-25 minutes north – 13 miles, from Traverse City airport. It is a nice journey through the main town of Traverse City, taking M-22 along the Traverse Bay shoreline. The vineyard is perched up on a lushly landscaped hill providing stunning vistas throughout the property. It’s rear grounds slope downward to the inn.

CUISINE: Ingredients for the Artisanal style cuisine that is served to guests are grown or raised on the property, or obtained within a 100 mile radius. The Chef hand gathers eggs from chickens in the morning; herbs and greens are grown in the inn’s green house. The property makes wine, including ice wine and eau du vie – using a hand crafted approach to wine making. A cheese creamery on the premises produces local Leelanau cheese. The cafe serves melted Raclette cheese, which is similar to Swiss cheese. The creamery also makes fromage blanc (similar to crème cheese.) In the beginning of May, innkeepers take guests out to the forest to hunt for the hard to find; morel mushrooms. The muddier the forest, the better, as the rain helps the morels. No mosquitoes are present at that time of year. After the hunt, guests provide their mushrooms to the Chef, who prepares a five-course morel inspired dinner.

CLEANLINESS: The rooms and public areas are immaculate. The staff can be seen cleaning the property interiors, grooming the public spaces, and even organizing the board games and books in the library. The landscaping, with dense greenery and vibrant colors, is flawlessly maintained.

VALUE: Compared to the larger hotels in the area, the lush beauty and quaint charm of the Inn at Black Star Farms offers tremendous value.

Lancaster County, PA: Bed and Breakfast Inns That Cultivate Peace of Mind

By: C.J. Good

After the 9/11 tragedy, many New Yorkers visited B & B inns. They spent endless hours sitting around tables at breakfast, talking about where they were at the 9/11 moment. Some guests narrowly missed the catastrophe. They were supposed to be working at the world trade center on 9/11, but something came up and interrupted their morning routine, so they escaped. Many tears were flowing. Guests convened in groups of 10 at a time, shared their feelings, and talked about how their lives had changed. The B & B atmosphere gave visitors a chance to release their feelings and speak about the enormous depth of the tragedy. Lodgers felt they had to get away to a B & B inn to relax and sleep, because their lives were so stressful and hectic.

You will feel the urge to capture the essence in writing, on guitar, or with paint and brush.

Sightseeing, tours, spa treatments, restaurant reservations and activities can usually be booked and taken care of by the innkeeper.

Lancaster County is home to the gentle Amish; a people with humongous hearts who love unconditionally. They are a people with very little in the way of worldly possessions, but are happy, peaceful and kind internally. Everything they produce is made by hand and from scratch. Foods are fresh from the farm. Some of their specialties include shoe-fly pie, maple brown sugar molasses pie, doughnuts, and woopie pie (shaped like an ice cream sandwich.) The Amish make their own candy, and pretzels. They don’t want to promote anything in life that has a negative impact. They run their factories on steam using belts and pulleys.

Just a few days in this environment begs for the reveries of quiet contemplation and connection with your inner self, which often leads to new levels of awareness and clarity.

A young stressed-out couple visited a B & B inn. They had a slightly curt and rude attitude. The hospitality of the innkeeper opened their eyes to another component of human compassion. The couple learned how to have a conversation with a stranger. Communicating with another human being rejuvenated the couple. When the trip was over, the couple returned to their daily lives with renewed enthusiasm and inspiration; ready to take on challenges. The B & B atmosphere helped them to love and recharge, and they kept coming back.

One of the things important to most B & B innkeepers is the opportunity is to be of service to the hearts, minds and souls of their guests. All it takes is a unique combination of gorgeous nature and an innkeeper’s sense of attention to well-being.

Two adult twins who were separated at birth – one was raised in an English orphanage, the other was raised in the U.S. – had a tearful reunion at a B & B inn. They were surprised about how much they had in common; books, food, and clothing were eerily similar. The visit was enormously therapeutic.

FEATURED PROPERTY: It goes without saying that the grounds and facilities of the historic Bella Vista Bed and Breakfast in Akron, PA (Lancaster County) built in 1896, are easy on the eyes, and a tranquil atmosphere is evident throughout the inn. More importantly, the service is considered warm, welcoming, and impeccable overall. The Bella Vista Bed and Breakfast is recommended to anyone who wants a good dose of serenity. It is a place where you can spend easy times in conversation with good friends.

The inn has relaxing porches and a courtyard with comfortable seating.

The Inn provides an incomparable sense of well-being. Shopping is a few miles away, as are some of the well-established galleries. Jewelry, quilts, Amish products, antiques and paintings are available in town.

Outlet shopping is nearby. Amish farmlands are a perfect area to ride a bike or walk. Maps for runners and walkers are available.

CLEANLINESS: The inn is known to be extremely clean, especially the guestrooms. Natural plantings and flowerbeds are dispersed throughout the property. Overall everything, including the town, is quite picturesque.

Pennsylvania Dutch Region: Bed and Breakfast Inns That Revitalize Your Mind, Body, Spirit

By: C.J. Good
Posted: Mar 28, 2011

When you want to kick back and revitalize, there are lots of destinations to consider. The right destination usually provides beautiful scenery for contemplation and deep thought. Consider taking a trip to a place you’ve never explored before. Pennsylvania Dutch Country (Lancaster County) is an area reputed to provide visitors with plenty of space to be by themselves. Breathtaking rolling hills, pastures, horses set against white snow views, acres of woods, farms, orchards and vineyards are some of the things you might see. Writers have been inspired by these surroundings and musicians have composed beautiful music. Many activities are available in the area, including shopping, dining, performing arts, galleries, hiking, culinary tours, wine tasting, biking, tennis, golf and walking. Many properties tend to be near water, which makes activities available such as fishing, kayaking, swimming and water sports. Sightseeing, tours, spa treatments, restaurant reservations and activities can usually be booked and taken care of by the innkeeper.

Pennsylvania Dutch County is home to the gentle Amish; a people with humongous hearts who love unconditionally. They are a people with very little in the way of worldly possessions, but are happy, peaceful, sincere and kind internally.

Parents have brought aimless and troubled teenaged boys to B & B’s – and the youths discover something beyond their experience that tends to focus them. B & B’s provide a safe space so teenagers can let down their guard. They can relax and think clearly which can bring clarity and a sense of purpose. The lives of troubled youths can miraculously turn around after staying at a B & B. The renewal they feel is a grace beyond measure.

When the chaos and confusion of our busy lives begins to wreak havoc, it is a good idea to slow down and appreciate the important things in life: family, friends and nature.

]]>

A young stressed-out couple visited a B & B inn. They had a slightly curt and rude attitude. The hospitality of the innkeeper opened their eyes to another component of human compassion. The couple learned how to have a conversation with a stranger. Communicating with another human being rejuvenated the couple. When the trip was over, the couple returned to their daily lives with renewed energy and sensitivity. The B & B atmosphere helped them to love and recharge, and they kept coming back.

Right after losing family members – parents, husband, son, or best friend, some people have traveled to bed and breakfasts and found their center, and their souls. Some innkeepers are so sensitive and compassionate they are able to provide a setting for people to unburden themselves. Not only are these innkeepers empathetic, they hire staff who love to talk to people, and who have the sensitivity to engage people. Even housekeepers are trained in how to engage the guests if they want to talk. Innkeepers understand how to reach a level of communication, which makes their lodgers feel comfortable. In regular hotel environments, the staff is normally faceless or anonymous, but in a bed and breakfast location, the staff is on the front line.

B & B innkeepers help their guests to celebrate life, even if the visitor has had problems. After a difficult or painful surgery, a B & B respite can be just what is needed to recuperate. After successfully finishing a long and arduous course of treatment for cancer, some patients gathered a group of friends to celebrate at a B & B. The environment was conducive for bonding and mutual support. Innkeepers understand how to create the right kind of a setting that allows rehabilitation to happen. Lodgers come to heal from the stress of their daily lives and find peace to reenergize.

Mothers bring their daughters for getaways. Young professionals come for a reprieve from stressful jobs. Military couples seek quiet time and spend a lot of moments just cocooning; just being by themselves. Older couples visit B & B’s to find the magic and rekindle the passion that brought them together in the first place.

Cellulitis Infection – Red, Tender & Warm.but not a Hotdog!

By: MiguelCarlos
Posted: Mar 30, 2011

The skin you see is made up of layers: the upper layer which is the epidermis, underneath it is the dermis and the deepest layer is the subcutaneous tissue. Imagine the skin is like a smores: the epidermis is the graham cracker, the dermis is the Hershey’s chocolate bar and the subcutaneous tissue is the marshmallow. In cellulitis, it is the chocolate bar and the marshmallows that are involved or infected, i.e. the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. It typically occurs in areas where a break in the integrity of the skin occurred such as after an abrasion, a scratch, an insect bite or a punctured wound. It may also result from blood-borne spread of infection to the skin and subcutaneous tissue; think a U-haul truck carrying your stuff from your house to a new one.
It is most commonly caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci (the same organism that causes strep throat), Staphylococcus aureus (the culprit bacteria that can make your pimple look like an about-to-erupt volcano) and Haemophilus influenza type B (the organism that can cause meningitis and pneumonia in kids less than three years of age). Cellulitis can occur at any age and involve any site but the extremities are most often noted.
How do you know if you have cellulitis? Stop, look and feel.
? Stop – and take time to examine the area involved.
? Look – is there swelling and redness? Does the area/lesion have ill-defined borders (in contrast to erysipelas, cellulitis has ill-defined borders since the inflammatory process occurs deep in the skin)?
? Feel – is it warm to touch? Is it tender? Is there pitting upon pressure? If the answer to all the above is a resounding yes? Then it is cellulitis.
So you’ve determined its cellulitis (and it’s not a hot dog), how do you treat it? We give it a whole lot of tender, loving care via antibiotics, primarily cephalexin and clindamycin with analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents (acetaminophen, NSAIDS). In cases where the cellulitis involves the buccal and peri-orbital areas (i.e. around the mouth and eyes) without a clear cut focus, then the heavy weights come in, the third generation cephalosporins: cefotaxime, ceftriaxone plus clindamycin.
So the next time you see something on your body that is red, warm, and tender: STOP, LOOK and FEEL it might be cellulitis.

Around the Fire Pit – Relax, Have Fun, and Create Memories with Family and Friends

By: Kay Weaver
Posted: Mar 31, 2011

]]>

It’s 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. The computer network was down four different times. The printer jammed while printing 500 pages for today’s meeting. A key client called to tell you they are going to shop for more competitive prices. You’re ready to scream and get away. Sitting around the fire pit while camping last summer was a great get-away, but you can’t afford camping this week-end. Or can you?

Imagine how nice it would be to have a fire pit in your own backyard. You could go home from a stressful week at work, start a nice campfire, sit back and just be mesmerized by it. Your special someone puts the cooking accessories on the fire ring and prepares your favorite meal over the campfire.

As you finish your meal, the sun begins to set, the air is a little cooler, and you love the warmth of the campfire. It is then that you decide it would be fun to invite a few family and friends to enjoy the beauty and relaxation of sitting around this fire pit. Quickly you make some phone calls. Then you get some marshmallows, chocolate candy bars, and graham crackers, for everyone to enjoy roasting marshmallows and eating Smores around that perfect campfire you built in that gorgeous fire pit which bears the logo of your Alma Mater.

By now family and friends have come to gather around the campfire. Someone begins telling their favorite campfire story. Others share their memories of things they used to do around the campfire. Then someone decides to sing some of the old favorite campfire songs. Suddenly someone recognizes your College logo imprinted on the fire pit. Let the college stories begin!

While telling these college stories, your kids surprise you by coming home for the week-end. They’ve just driven four hours and they are starved. They put on the grill accessory, grill some hamburgers, and join you and the others around the campfire. In an attempt to get to know everyone a little better, your kids start asking questions such as:
o Why did you choose the college you attended?
o What one thing would you like to accomplish in life?

Wimberley, Texas: A Wine Country Bed and Breakfast Inn That Cultivates Reconnection

smores

Mike Schneider of the Blair House Inn Bed and Breakfast in Wimberley, TX told me that he endeavors to create a space for loved-ones to bond. The inn’s facilities are designed to allow guests to be separate from the whole. This serves to create a healthy relationship for visitors and encourages the exchange of thoughts and feelings so couples are able to reconnect. Mothers bring their daughters to Blair House for getaways; Fathers bring their sons. Young professionals come for a reprieve from stressful jobs. Military couples seek quiet time and spend a lot of moments just cocooning; just being by themselves. Older couples visit to find the magic and rekindle the passion that brought them together in the first place.

Consider taking a trip to a place you’ve never explored before. The village of Wimberley, in the Texas hill country, is an area reputed to provide their visitors with plenty of space to be by themselves. Breathtaking rolling landscapes, pastures, horses set against hill views, acres of woods, farms, orchards and vineyards are some of the things you might see. Many writers have been inspired by these surroundings and musicians have composed beautiful music. If this option seems a bit remote, don’t fret. Many activities are available in the area, including shopping, performing arts, galleries, hiking, culinary classes, wine tasting, biking, tennis, golf and walking. Wimberley is near water, which makes activities available such as fishing, kayaking, swimming and water sports. Sightseeing, tours, spa treatments, restaurant reservations and activities can usually be booked and taken care of by the innkeeper.

When the trip is over, return to your daily life with renewed enthusiasm and inspiration; ready to take on challenges.

One of the things important to most B & B innkeepers is the opportunity is to be of service to the hearts, minds and souls of their guests. Their goal is to create an environment for people to come and find peace. “We take someone who has a good spirit and we lift it up,” remarks Mike Schneider, owner of the Blair House Inn Bed and Breakfast in Wimberley, TX. “We provide a nice atmosphere for guests that allows their individual spirit to soar.”

Operating a successful B & B involves more than being a business owner. Innkeepers provide an ambiance that can reawaken a person, enabling them to find some semblance of themselves in a busy world.

All it takes is a unique combination of gorgeous nature and an innkeeper’s sense of attention to wellbeing.

A Never Fail way to Build a Campfire in the woods

smores

Fire Safety Companies: Campfire is an extraordinary way to bring your friends and family together sharing stores, melting smores, and telling ghost stores. The most important thing is to bring your sleeping bag, food, fishing rods, tents, first-aid kit, bug spray, aluminum foil, cooking mitts, pots and pans that are fire friendly, racks for grilling, soap, a kettle that is also fire safe, and plenty of water. Knowing how to build a hot, sustainable, safe campfire is essential. Now, no one seems to know how to make a decent fire. It burns too hot. It burns out. So you better learn how to make a decent fire first, actually what makes a fire? There is a thing known as the tetrahedron of fire or the four things needed to make a fire, they are,

Fuel: This is what you are going to burn off. Most commonly it would be wood, but it can also be a dried dung, coal, gasoline. Anything ignitable.
Heat: You cannot start a fire without heat. The heat is normally rendered by a match or a lighter. You can even induce enough heat from the friction of rubbing two sticks together, but this is not a recommended one. Other less common means of heat are firesteel and the use of a piece of steel wool and batteries.
Oxygen: There is no flame without oxygen. If your fire couldn’t get enough oxygen it will quickly die off.
Sustained chemical reaction: This means that you should have enough of the three previous ingredients to keep the reaction going.

So how do you interpret these principles into a good old campfire? Let’s go through the process step by step,

Safety first!
Clear a space for your fire. Fire has a inclination to get out of control. You must have a space which is sheltered from the wind. Wind can make a fire unpredictable and difficult to start. Make sure to clear a space at least four feet around the area where your fire is to be placed. It is also a common practice to dig a fire pit and ring the spit with stones. This will further prevent the fire from getting out of control.

Collect your materials:
You will require a lot of wood. Think of what you might need and just triple it. You will need to gather tenders such as dry and easy to burn material like pine needles, moss, birch bark, kindling, fuel wood. It is a good idea to place your fuel close to the fire where the residual heat can further dry the wood.

Start by loosely piling the tender in the center of your firepit and surround it loosely with tender. Apply heat to the tender and slowly and steadily begin adding more tender.
Once your tender pile is good and hot, you can begin adding the smaller pieces of fuel wood. stably feed the fire until it can maintain a flame on its own.

Now that you have a flame going, it is time to concern about sustaining the chemical reaction. You can achieve this by placing your logs in such a manner as to allow for oxygen and heat to fuel the reaction. There are several accepted methods for achieving this.

Log Cabin Method:
Lay a layer of wood and sticks crosswise across the fire and then lend another layer perpendicular on top of the first. Make sure to leave a quarter of an inch to one inch between sticks. Repeat. As the fire grows, add larger and larger logs. This method creates the chimney effect, which pulls hot air through the center of the fire and aids in combustion.

Teepee Method:
Just like it sounds. You build a teepee like structure out of sticks and logs (making sure to leave space between or air to flow) around the tinder pile. As the wood burns, it falls into the fire. This method also utilizes the chimney effect.

The X Ditch:
Rather than dig a firepit, this method requires that you dig two trenches in an x shape. Create your fire where the two trenches intersect. The fire will pull air via trenches, once again creating a chimney effect.

Once your fire is going, it becomes less about right building and more about maintaining. Stably add fuel to your fire and make adjustments so that all four requirements are met. I guarantee you will stay warm all night.
