Guard Alaska Bear Spray For Camping, Because Bear Attacks Are Not Cool

Bear spray and camping go together like smores and campfires. One just doesn’t belong without the other and one of the major reasons for that is because being mauled by a quarter ton grizzly is not at all cool. Seriously, I enjoy camping and I’ve seen bears and one thing I know for sure is that it would be most unenjoyable if any of these bears I’ve had the pleasure of viewing in the wild were to bite me in the neck region. I’m fairly certain that would damper an otherwise wonderful weekend. I know what you’re thinking, “but what if the bear just clamped his ultra-powerful jaws of razor sharp teeth onto your torso or leg perhaps?”. The answer is still no. It’s not so much I’m worried about my neck exclusively, I’m just not that hip on putting any part of my body in the mouth of a Northern Wisconsin Black bear.

I’ve discussed this topic with friends and I have yet to find any that disagree with me about the whole bear mauling thing. We are all pretty much in agreement that having humongous razor sharp claws rip through our faces, exposing the skull underneath would be the polar opposite of a “good time”. That is why we all agree and adhere to 1 basic rule while camping and I’m going to capitalize this so it will hopefully sink in…

IF YOU ARE CAMPING ANYWHERE WHERE THERE MAY BE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF A BEAR BEING PRESENT YOU SHOULD HAVE GUARD ALASKA BEAR SPRAY ON YOU AT ALL TIMES.

This is an extremely simple rule to follow and one that could very realistically save your life one day. It just doesn’t make sense not to bring along protection from a creature that you have almost no chance at all of fending off with your bare hands. Also keep in mind that bears won’t follow basic rules of fighting etiquette. Before engaging in hand-to0hand combat with a bear you could certainly tell it “hey bear, let’s do this thing but no eye gouging, okay?” , but I doubt very seriously that it will listen. It’s pretty much just going to go for the throat.

As always I kid and say ridiculous things with the hope that you remember these bits of advice that I give you. Please do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and remember to carry bear spray if you are going to go camping in an area that could find you face-to-face with a bear.

Public balconies offer mesmerizing views of 160 acres of woods, orchards and vineyards. The back courtyard has comfortable lounge chairs for reading or relaxing. Gourmet picnics, prepared by the inn on request, can be enjoyed on a blanket in the courtyard, near the croquet lawn. WiFi is included in rooms and throughout the public spaces. A sauna and marble Jacuzzi tub, with double-headed Jacuzzi shower, is also available. 160 acres of groomed wooded trails are accessible for hiking. In winter, guests can cross country ski on the property. The inn also provides snowshoes. Boyne mountain ski resort is one hour away. LOCATION: The location is in the heart of the Leelanau Peninsula wine trail, about 20-25 minutes north – 13 miles, from Traverse City airport. It is a nice journey through the main town of Traverse City, taking M-22 along the Traverse Bay shoreline. The vineyard is perched up on a lushly landscaped hill providing stunning vistas throughout the property. It’s rear grounds slope downward to the inn.

CUISINE: Ingredients for the Artisanal style cuisine that is served to guests are grown or raised on the property, or obtained within a 100 mile radius. The Chef hand gathers eggs from chickens in the morning; herbs and greens are grown in the inn’s green house. The property makes wine, including ice wine and eau du vie – using a hand crafted approach to wine making.  A cheese creamery on the premises produces local Leelanau cheese. The cafe serves melted Raclette cheese, which is similar to Swiss cheese. The creamery also makes fromage blanc (similar to crème cheese.)  In the beginning of May, innkeepers take guests out to the forest to hunt for the hard to find; morel mushrooms. The muddier the forest, the better, as the rain helps the morels. No mosquitoes are present at that time of year. After the hunt, guests provide their mushrooms to the Chef, who prepares a five-course morel inspired dinner.

CLEANLINESS: The rooms and public areas are immaculate. The staff can be seen cleaning the property interiors, grooming the public spaces, and even organizing the board games and books in the library. The landscaping, with dense greenery and vibrant colors, is flawlessly maintained.

VALUE: Compared to the larger hotels in the area, the lush beauty and quaint charm of the Inn at Black Star Farms offers tremendous value.

In the pizza industry, there has been many a conflict over how to make the best and most perfect pizza. Debates over the subject include what type of crust to use, the type of pizza sauce, type of toppings and even the type of cheese that makes the best pizza pie. From New York Style to Chicago Style to California Style, Finizio’s Pizza in Westmont,NJ offers them all, differences in technique are what make the Pizza World go around. Another one of those pizza arguments is where on the pizza the toppings should go. It is debatable that toppings under the sauce look better or worse than toppings above the sauce and cheese. At Finizio’s Pizza in Westmont,NJ there is even an issue over which one tastes better we here.

Chicago Style pizza which is not served at Finizio’s Pizza in Westmont,NJ is a recipe steeped in tradition. This deep-dish style pizza goes against the traditional grain of most of the other pizza recipes in the U.S. Instead of placing the toppings you choose on the top of the pizza sauce and cheeses, the sliced mozzarella cheese is placed in a layer on the crust, which is placed in the bottom of a deep-dish pizza pan. On top of the mozzarella cheese is placed the toppings of choice, such as Italian sausage, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms. The next layer is the sauce, which is the top layer. To many people who are not from Chicago or familiar with this style of pizza, this is something that is brand new. It may even seem backward to those who live elsewhere in the country and are used to another style of pizza. Many people say that Chicago Style is the best because it helps to keep the crust crispy because the sauce is on top, and not directly on the crust, making it soggy.

This other type of pizza places the sauce on the crust, shredded cheese layered above the sauce, and the toppings scattered above the cheese. This is what most people in the United States think of when they think of pizza. Many people don’t even know of a different way of making pizza. Some say Americans love the tradition of sauce directly on the crust. Finizio’s Pizza in Westmont,NJ makes their pizza this way.

While the theory of the “best” pizza is definitely up to the individual and personal preference, arguments over whose style is the “best” is an ongoing battle in the pizza universe. But Finizio’s Pizza in Westmont,NJ would love to help you find out what your favorite pizza is. The argument will never be settled between the die-hards from their respective regions. But, the good news is, that the United States has become more and more open-minded when it comes to food. The real winners in this debate are the ones who eat a little bit of both types of pizza. If you are used to Chicago Style and the toppings beneath the sauce, check out a new thing and have some New York Style or California Style pizza. The same goes for you New Yorkers and others. A culinary chef preps and cooks a variety of meals for the public. Meals such as soups, appetizers, salads, side dishes, entrees, desserts and breads are included. Naturally a culinary chef has a widespread work experience along with formal training from a culinary institute or college. Listed below are 5 culinary chef career tips to look over before starting a chef career.

Step 1: Researching the Culinary Chef Career Duties and Education

A master of food, a culinary chef prepares meals that comfort, uplift and arouse all while nourishing patrons’ taste buds and palates. A culinary chef also crates menus while preparing food and managing kitchen employees. Culinary chefs must have a great sense of smell and taste with high levels of creativity and a knack for experimentation (to ensure the success of the menu). Some culinary chefs work from the bottom up; however, it is more common these days for a culinary chef to have formal and professional training through an apprenticeship or program offered by an institute or college.

Step 2: Prep While in High School

Along with your relevant high school classes, like English, mathematics, take any class that will prepare you for the kitchen. Business, food handling and cooking safety are good to take as well. Check to see if your community offers chefs training programs. Finally, get experience in the industry by getting a job at a restaurant. Any of your choice, experience always matters.

Step 3: Work Your Way Up

The best way in becoming a culinary chef is starting at the bottom of the chef career path and work your way up. Start in the kitchen as a dishwasher, bus boy/girl, host or waiter/waitress. Get familiar with the food, the customers, the staff and the business; it well you in the long to understand what a restaurant owners wants and needs from employees. Your first cooking job usually is cleaning cooking areas, peeling, gutting, chopping; the lighter things. Next, you will be responsible for preparing soups, appetizers, salads or desserts. The next step is becoming a line cook; this is where you prepare items based on type of food or cooking, such as grill or sauté cook. Second to the head chef is the sous chef, who works on the line and has the added responsibility of watching over the rest of the kitchen staff. Top of the ‘top’ culinary chefs is the executive chef. As executive chef, you manage the entire kitchen, create the menu, invent and test cooking ingredients and recipes and stock for the entire kitchen. It can very well take you years to become a ‘top’ culinary executive chef.

Step 4: Apprenticeship

Enrolling in an apprenticeship program accredited by the ACCFFAC (American Culinary Federation Accrediting Commission) will most certainly put your culinary chef career on the right path. Many apprenticeships are 2 or 3 year on-the-job, full-time training and you must complete at least 12 courses in the subjects relevant to a culinary chef career. These apprentices are paid and can earn you an optional culinary arts associate degree in the process. The American Culinary Federation’s (ACF’s) website has all the details and locations of the programs.

Step 5: Formal Recipe for Success

In order for students to start a culinary chef career, and advance in the culinary chef field, you must have a high school diploma. Trade and vocational schools offer basic training as well. You may attend a community college or culinary institution or attend a private cooking school that offers 2 or 4 year programs in culinary arts. In addition to your program learning, students enrolled in culinary arts programs find that working in an ‘upscale’ or ‘fine-dining’ restaurants help the learning process significantly. ACF offers certifications in a number of culinary arts careers such as; educator, personal chef, pastry chef and others. The combination of certification and work experience with on-the-job training is the best recipe for success in starting your culinary chef career.
